Wireless backhaul

Wireless Backhaul is one of the key areas where considerable investment is expected by telco service providers. This is because of the explosion of mobile subscribers and the increasing number of multimedia services such as video conferencing and mobile TV, being offered over mobiles. The arrival and proliferation of 3G and 4G technologies like HSDPA, LTE and WiMax will raise the stakes further. The current practice of using T1/E1 lines for backhauling cell-towers to the Metro-node simply won't scale in such a scenario. Carrier Ethernet offers an attractive alternative of scaling capacity to not only meet current needs but also be ready for the future.

Features
nGIN's Wireless backhaul solution with Carrier Ethernet features

  • Connectivity Fault Management (IEEE 802.1ag) for Fault detection & monitoring at the service level
  • Provider Backbone Bridging – Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE, IEEE 802.1Qay) for point-to-point traffic engineered tunnels, with fault detection and 50ms Automatic Protection Switching with CFM
  • Shortest Path Bridging (IEEE 802.1aq) for deploying Carrier Grade point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and multipoint-to-multipoint ethernet switched paths with a modified ISIS stack and CFM
Typical Deployment
Carrier Ethernet, specifically PBB-TE, is ideal for Mobile Backhaul because of the point-to-point nature of the application. PBB-TE also works seamlessly with PBB, thereby interworking well with the Metro Node. Devices where PBB-TE could be deployed for enabling low-cost backhaul include:
  • RAN nodes/Base Stations
  • Point-to-point Microwave Systems
  • Ethernet access devices
  • Multiservice Provisioning platforms
  • Multiservice switches/routers
  • Carrier Ethernet Switch Routers

Value Add
Wireless backhaul requires ability to meet stringent SLA requirements, with SONET/SDH like OAM, 99.999% availabilty, QoS for new video and the flexibility to be configured in point-to-point and point-to-multipoint configurations. nGIN's solution offers a carrier grade scalable optimized solution, with well defined interfaces to external modules, thereby enabling equipment manufacturers to add Carrier Ethernet backhaul support to their equipment in no time and get to the market faster.

nGIN can add further value with

  • CLI Framework and Wizard for Rapid development of customized CLI
  • Leverage in house Test Automation & Management Tool-EzTest to expedite testing cycle
  • Experience with leading Network / Packet processors such as Broadcom, Intel, Agere, Bay Micro etc
