The simplicity and cost effectiveness of Ethernet and the fact that 95% of network traffic originates as Ethernet makes it inevitable that Ethernet will move into the Metro and Core networks, slowly, but surely. There are challenges in making Ethernet suitable for deployment in the Metro and Core, and these are being addressed by the various standards bodies like IEEE and ITU-T and industry groups like Metro Ethernet Forum. Concrete steps have already been taken and standards like Connectivity Fault Management are on the verge of being standardised.
nGIN has come up with a Carrier Ethernet Solution enabler which has the building blocks that will enable it's customer's to get a time-to-market advantage over their competitors in building and deploying Carrier Grade Ethernet products. The solution includes
- Connectivity Fault Management (802.1ag)
- Management Layer (CLI/SNMP) for configuration of CFM and Ethernet Switched Paths (802.1Qay)
- Y.1731 Ethernet OAM (for Performance Monitoring)
- Automatic Protection Switching
- Well defined interfaces with NP layer, OS and other modules.
- Host simulation with support for 802.1ad(Q-in-Q), 802.1ah(Mac-in-Mac)
nGIN is also adding Multipoint-to-Multipoint capabilities to the solution based on the IEEE 802.1aq Shortest Path Bridging standard.
